Son of Raja Sir Padam Singh of Bushehar, Shri Virbhadra Singh was born at Sarahan, Distt. Shimla, June23, 1934. A B.A.(Hons) and an M.A Virbhadra Singh was educated at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla and St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He is an agriculturist and horticulturist by profession.
Honorary Captain in the Indian Army, Shri Virbhadra Singh was elected Member Lok Sabha in 1962, 1967, 1972 and in 1980. He was a Member of Indian Delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations,1976; Deputy Minister, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Govt. of India, December 1976 to March, 1977; Minister of State for Industries, Government of India, September, 1982 to April, 1983. He has associated with various Cultural & Social Organisations and remained President, Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan and Friends of Soviet Union Society (H.P.State Branch).
Shri Virbhadra Singh was elected twice to the Legislative Assembly from Jubbal-Kotkhai Constituency (first on 5th October,1983, in a by-election; and again in 1985 general elections). He was elected Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh in April 8, 1983 to March 5,1990.Shri Virbhadra Singh was elected from a nearby Rohru Constituency in February, 1990 and was elected President State Congress Committee, February 1992 to September, 1994. He won the Rohru Constituency again in November, 1993 and assumed Chief Ministership of the State once again on 3rd December, 1993 to 24th March 1998 and elected to State Assembly in 1998, Leader of the Congress Legislative Group in the Assembly.
He won from Rohru Constituency in February 2003 and assumed the office of Chief Minister on March 6, 2003. Shri Virbhadra Singh has travelled extensively. His favourite pass time is reading and meeting people. His special interests include Service of the people and resolving their problems.
